This is Amsterdam and this is my bike

Simple message tells a lot.

Amsterdamer are very proud of their bicycle friendly city, and this video show how much they enjoy the status. I am not so sure if Californian can be as proud for their cars. But in any case the US dependence on cars looks more like a liability than progress in today. What do we want for Singapore in the future?

  1. I see SG changing.. maybe it is the sunday rides we do regularly. I think the perception of cycling is still regarded some what as an recreational activity rather then a real option for transport. The PCN is a good way forward… but I hope cycling is not just limited to this areas only.

My wish for SG is that we can do more public transport and have cycling considered as a prime mobility option, esp in the City area. Maybe even have full sized bike able to take the train. I hear HK is now doing that… why not SG?

  2. Singapore is more suitable for cycling than Hong Kong due to its size and general flat landscape.
To make bicycle a prime mobility option, road planners need to view their design through the eyes of a cyclist. The best way is to ride a bicycle to work themselves. I am sure they will find a few improvement points on their rides. There is lots of opportunities, even within the current given road space.
MRT and bus companies can start to treat cyclist as an important customer base, not just a source of problems. Combining the comfort and efficiency for long distance of public transport and the personal door to door timeliness of bicycle, there will be little needs for cars.
Singaporean can be as proud as Amsterdamer for their humble bicycle.
